Sinuosity is one of the premier trail building firms in the Northeast.  We're looking to add team members with experience building mountain bike and multi-use trails.  We have a variety of projects for the 2024 season (mid-April to early-November) with machine built and hand built trail elements.

Hand Crew Trail Builder:

  • Approximately 32 to 40 hours per week (part time positions are also available)

  • Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 or 6 pm (weather dependent, self-directed early risers are welcome)

  • Pay Range: $18 to $22 based on experience

Are you familiar with the tools used to build singletrack trails by hand?  Do you want to spend more time in the woods crafting fun trails and improving your skills?  Let us know about your experience!

The ideal candidate would have experience building trails with hand tools, whether professionally or as a volunteer.  This is physically demanding outdoor work.  We work hard and take it seriously, but enjoy our jobs and make it a lifestyle.

Skills Required:

  • Familiarity and proficiency with the variety of tools used for trail building.

  • Ability to take and follow direction without close supervision.

  • Self-directed within described roles and able to anticipate appropriate next steps.

  • Able and open to work in variable weather conditions and environments.

  • Reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and a good driving record 

Additional Valued Skills:

  • Experience safely operating and maintaining a chainsaw to cut small trees.

  • An eye for trail flow and drainage is important and will be taught if not already learned.

  • Basic carpentry experience is helpful, but can also be taught.

Job Duties:

  • Primarily building new trails with hand tools. 

  • Tasks include: Corridor cutting and brush clearing, bench cutting new trail, bridge and boardwalk construction, root trimming and finish work on machine built trails.

  • Occasional use of mechanized tools and equipment, depending on individual’s experience and training. 

  • Report to and communicate regularly with Project Manager and/or Crew Leader.

  • This position involves working outdoors under natural exposure conditions. 

Experienced Excavator Operator: (with trail building experience)

  • Approximately 32 to 40 hours per week (part time positions are also available)

  • Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 or 6 pm (weather dependent, self-directed early risers are welcome)

  • Pay Range: $22 to $28 based on experience

Are you ready to join a dynamic team of professionals doing what you love?  Have you mastered the fundamentals of building trails with machines and are looking for greener pastures?  Come build creative and beautiful trails with us in Vermont this season!

The ideal candidate would have at least two years/seasons of experience building mountain bike trails with mini excavators and/or hand tools.  The position would be approximately full time for the build season, though schedules can be flexible if needed.  We have a fleet of specialized mini excavators and are looking for another operator to join our crew of riders/builders.  Our attention to detail and high quality, low impact outcomes are important to our company and our clients.  We're happy to bring on an experienced trail builder or advance the skills of the right candidate as well.

  • Familiarity and proficiency with mini excavators used for trail building.

  • Ability to work independently, take and follow direction, and learn new skills without close supervision.

  • A keen eye for trail flow and drainage.

  • Self-directed within described roles and able to anticipate appropriate next steps.

  • Able and open to work in variable weather conditions and environments.

  • Reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and a good driving record.

  • Report to and communicate regularly with Project Manager.

  • Operate mini excavators with precision and efficiency to build low impact trails in forested environments.

  • Implement proper trail building techniques including separation of organic and mineral soil, stable rock placement, full bench construction, minimization of loose soil scattered around work area, etc.

  • Must be able to work outside the machine when needed.

  • Basic maintenance and repair of excavators like checking oils, filters, and replacing tracks.
